Law Student's Guide to the Law Library

This guide will help you navigate the resources and services available through the Law Library.

Theft Warning

Theft Warning

Unfortunately, thefts do occur in the library and the law school. We need YOU to help prevent thefts by following these steps:

  • DO NOT LEAVE LAPTOPS OR ANY OTHER VALUABLES UNATTENDED.
  • Do not admit individuals who do not have U Card access to the building or library after hours.
  • Report suspicious behavior and incidents to library staff immediately.

Most thefts in the law school are crimes of opportunity and take place in a very short amount of time. Even if you are just going to the restroom or to pick up a printout, please do not leave your belongings unattended. If you must, have a trusted classmate watch your things temporarily, but we highly recommend that you just take your things with you.

Security Monitors

Security Monitors

The UMPD has a staff of student Security Monitors who patrol the Law School and Law Library after hours (schedule subject to change). This service is to your benefit, as the monitors secure the access points of the building and monitor the presence of those in the building after it has closed.

Only current law students, faculty, and staff of the University of Minnesota Law School are allowed to be in the Law Library after it closes.

Please keep your U Card with you at all times after the Law Library closes for two reasons:

  • access to the library
  • providing identification that shows you are a member of the Law School community

The security monitor on duty will pass through the Library each day after closing time to verify the permissions of each person in the Library. Please be cooperative and show your U Card to the monitor when requested.

All individuals not affiliated with the Law School will be asked to leave and escorted out if necessary.

Safety and Security Resources

Safety and Security Resources

Please be aware of your surroundings and make smart decisions. Be alert! Don't walk alone at night. If you see something or someone suspicious, tell a staff member immediately, call 4-COPS (University Police) or call 9-1-1 in an emergency.

The University of Minnesota Police Department are a strong resource and they encourage you to make use of the safety and security programs offered through the University.
